Demi Method

What is the Demi Method?

The Demi Method is a minimal approach to makeup that utilizes color theory to enhance skin tone and invisibly filters distractions in the skin for an undetectable makeup look. Bringing things like blemishes, dark undereyes, rosacea, redness, and dark spots back into balance with the rest of the face.

Demi doesn't “cover” imperfections in the skin - it changes the color we see.

This is not foundation or concealer, or “traditional” color correcting. This is a sheer filter. Rather than attempting to find one or two pigments that match the entire face, Demi Colour utilizes complimentary colors, applied only where needed. Demi Colour is the ULTIMATE “no makeup makeup”. The color science of Demi doesn’t add any visible makeup at all. None. Doesn’t crease, doesn’t add texture, always blends with your skin tone all year long, lasts all day without the need for setting sprays or powders, never looks muddy or cakey, and is catered to your face and your needs exactly. Letting your unique beauty shine through in a way no makeup product ever has. When I’m wearing Demi Colour I really feel like my true self. It feels like I’m not wearing makeup at all!

The Demi Story

According to the creator of Demi Colour, Cara Brook:

I remember thinking, “When will scientists or chemists make a foundation that is smooth, doesn’t crease, doesn’t separate, and covers imperfections but looks like luminous skin?”

After searching high and low, researching, and testing, I resigned myself to thinking, “It can’t be done. We could get some of what we want from any given traditional foundation, but sheer physics make getting everything we want impossible.” We want imperfections covered; we want our best features enhanced; we want our skin to look like skin; and our best bet is giving up a little of each until we meet in the middle. A compromise.

But then, almost by accident, but also by devotion, determination, and an inability to settle for fragmented beauty, we discovered that traditional foundation has been used all wrong all along. It is still true that no foundation can ever or will ever give you everything you want; that’s what we couldn’t see at the time.

Traditional foundation itself was the problem and manipulating and improving or changing it was never going to be the solution. The solution was to forget everything we think we know about makeup and start over.

Demi is truly the way makeup should have always been used. Years from now, we will look back at the sea of beige we were painting and spackling over our beautiful faces and wonder, “What took us so long?”

Demi Method Components

Adding Color & Toning

Using warm tones to bronze, add warmth, add color to pale areas, and toning general discoloration.

Filtering

To filter distractions, use the color wheel to choose a complimentary color to the excess color in the skin you’re trying to filter.

Ex. If you see excess violet, use Y1 to neutralize.

Sculpting

This is the Demi version of “contouring”. Using neutral shades to add shadow and define your features. (Most people typically want to sculpt around the perimeters of the face, hairline, under cheekbones, sides of the nose, and underneath the bottom lip.)

Blush & Lip Color

Use these shades (usually level 5 or 7) to apply a light and feathery touch of color to your cheeks and lips.

Gloss & Balm

This is the Demi version of Illuminator! Apply the Gloss or Balm with your fingertip to the top of your cheekbones, the cupid’s bow of your upper lip, your brow bone, and anywhere else you want to add a boost of natural luminosity to your skin. These can also be used on the lips to add a moisturizing shine.

Seeing Excess Color in Your Skin

Learning how to “see” the excess colors in your skin is a learned skill and takes practice! Once you learn how to spot excess color, it will become second nature.

Demi Method FAQ’s

This looks complicated! Is it difficult to learn?

It might seem complicated at first because we’re all so used to “traditional” forms of makeup. Once you’re able to set aside what you’ve always known and grasp this new concept, it actually makes so much sense. Instead of covering your entire face with makeup to hide a few “imperfections”, with Demi you’re filtering out the few distractions so your natural beauty can shine through on its own. There is a learning curve at first, especially for those of us who are “makeup people”, because we tend to have the most to “unlearn”. But putting in the effort is so worth the results! Once you learn how to do Demi, it becomes so much easier like second nature.

Can Demi Colour be used with IIID Foundation?

They aren’t meant to be used together, and Demi can stand on its own. However - if you’re interested in the added color correction underneath your regular makeup, that can be done! My advice is to make sure you’re applying Demi first onto bare skin so it “sticks” properly. Gently add other makeup and/or powders on top.

Do you use a primer or setting spray with Demi?

Nope! You’re using such a miniscule amount of makeup with Demi that once it’s applied it stays put and never creases. If you have a primer you like that’s also part of your skincare routine, you could continue using it! But primers and setting sprays are unnecessary with Demi Colour. The finish of Demi is the same as your natural skin texture.

So, you use these rainbow colors to do your entire face?

Yes! It’s all about the color wheel. When you combine complimentary colors they create a neutral color. For example, if you have excess blue under your eyes and apply an orange Demi shade, it filters the blue and makes it disappear.

How long do the colors last?

Each tin should last for a year! And that expiration date is mostly based on sanitary standards. You use such a miniscule amount of makeup per application, so they last a long time. You may go through some colors faster than others, but shouldn’t need to replace them often.

Do you prefer the original IIID Foundation or Demi Colour?

I still love them both! I still use both depending on my needs or the look I’m going for on a given day. They’re so different and each have their own strengths. IIID Foundation is the most stunning “traditional” makeup I’ve ever used - it’s very skin-like but does still leave a subtle makeup texture on the skin (it’s still makeup after all!) - but it’s so beautiful and fast and easy. Demi leaves a flawless undetectable finish and enhances your natural beauty like nothing else, but it can take longer to apply and can require more effort and determination to learn how to use it properly. Seint is the best makeup I’ve ever used, and you truly can’t go wrong with any Seint makeup.
